Choose Your Design

Reserve your seat for our 2pm Kinusaiga Workshop on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kinusaiga is the Japanese art of no-sew fabric painting — small pieces of fabric are tucked into grooves carved into a wooden board to build a picture with the soft texture and depth of a quilt, with no needle and thread required. If you can push fabric into a groove, you can do this. Beginners are genuinely welcome.

Seats are limited. Choose your design from the dropdown when you register — that reserves both your spot in the studio and the template you'll be working on. Prefer something personal? Choose the Custom Design option and we'll cut a board from your own photo or idea.

What Is Kinusaiga?

Kinusaiga (絹彩画) is a traditional Japanese fabric craft that began as a way to give worn-out silk kimonos a second life. Instead of stitching, the artist carves shallow grooves into a wooden panel and tucks scraps of fabric into those grooves, one small section at a time. The finished piece looks like a painting from across the room and like a quilt up close. It is slow, quiet, forgiving work — there is no wrong brushstroke, because there is no brush.

Choose Your Design

  • Sunflower Kinusaiga Fabric Art (G0691) — a warm autumn sunflower in layered fabric.
  • Cardinal Kinusaiga Fabric Art (G0696) — a bold red cardinal on a branch. Our most detailed design.
  • Lighthouse Kinusaiga Fabric Art (G0695) — a classic coastal lighthouse.
  • Dog Paw Print Kinusaiga Fabric Art (G0692) — a soft fabric paw print to honor a beloved pet.
  • Beach Sunrise Kinusaiga Fabric Art (G0693) — a sunrise over the shore.
  • Custom Design (+$20) — bring us your own photo, pet, monogram, or idea and we'll carve a one-of-a-kind board just for you. See the custom details below.

What's Included

Your $65 seat covers everything you need for the session:

  • Your grooved design board, pre-cut and ready to fill
  • A shadow box frame so the piece is ready to hang the moment you finish
  • All fabric and tools for the workshop
  • Hands-on instruction from start to finish — no experience required

Want a Custom Design?

Choose the Custom Design seat for $85 — that's your full workshop seat plus a $20 design fee for the artwork and custom cutting. It's the option to pick when you want your own dog, your beach house, a monogram, a favorite photo, or a design that means something only to you.

  • Send your photo or idea early. After you register, email or message us your image so we have time to translate it into a carve-ready design.
  • Please book at least one week ahead. Custom boards are drawn and cut by hand before your session — last-minute customs may need to move to a later date.
  • Simple, high-contrast images work best. Kinusaiga builds a picture in bold fabric shapes, so a clear silhouette translates beautifully and a busy, low-light photo does not. We'll tell you honestly if an image won't work and help you pick a better one.
  • Same size, same everything else. Custom pieces finish at approximately 10" x 10" and include the shadow box frame, fabric, and tools, just like our standard designs.

Good to Know Before You Come

  • Fabric choices vary. Every kit is built from our in-stock fabrics, so prints and colors shift over time and no two finished pieces are ever exactly alike. That's the beauty of it.
  • Bring your own fabric if you'd like. A loved one's shirt, a baby blanket, a scrap with a story — you're welcome to work sentimental pieces into your design alongside our studio fabrics.
  • These projects run long. Kinusaiga takes more time than most of our projects, and the Cardinal especially. If you don't finish in one sitting you can take it home to complete, or set it aside and come back to another session.
  • Come as you are. No sewing skill, no art background, no special supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is this workshop?
Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 2pm, in the studio at Paisley Grace Makery in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Do I need any sewing or art experience?
No. Kinusaiga uses no needle, no thread, and no paint. You tuck fabric into pre-carved grooves, and we walk you through every step. Beginners do beautifully at this.

Can I make a custom Kinusaiga design?
Yes. Choose the Custom Design seat for $85 — $65 for the workshop plus a $20 design fee — and send us your photo or idea after you register. Please book at least a week ahead so we have time to draw and cut your board.

What kind of photo works for a custom design?
Bold, high-contrast images with a clear shape — a pet's profile, a house, a monogram, a favorite flower. Fine detail and busy backgrounds get lost in fabric. Send us what you have and we'll tell you honestly whether it will translate.

How long does a Kinusaiga piece take?
Longer than most studio projects — plan on a full, unhurried session. If you're not finished, take it home or come back and complete it at a later session at no extra charge.

How big is the finished piece?
Designs finish at approximately 10" x 10" and come with their own shadow box frame, ready to display.

Can I bring fabric that means something to me?
Yes, and we love when people do. Bring a shirt, a blanket, a handkerchief — anything you'd like woven into the design. It turns a pretty piece into a keepsake.

Can I come with a friend or a group?
Absolutely. Register each person separately so every seat and design is reserved. Seats are limited for this session.

What if I need to cancel?
Reach out to the studio as soon as you can and we'll do our best to move you to another session.
